About Nicole

My name is Nicole and I am passionate about helping 4th and 5th grade students find their confidence in mathematics.

I myself struggled as a math student until I reached college and took a course on how to teach mathematics. My professor created a new number system for us to learn through. Our first day was learning how to count to 5. He used this method to teach us the entirety of elementary mathematics. By the end, I understood that I actually always had "a math brain", I just never learned how different concepts connected or the "whys" behind them. I want every child to know that they have a math brain, too.

I spent 7 years as a classroom teacher learning everything I could about math instruction so that I could reach every student, no matter where they were at. I then moved into a position that allows me to create professional development resources for upper elementary math teachers. My work here ensures that teachers have a strong conceptual understanding of the math they're teaching so that they can bring engaging, hands-on learning to their students.

My goal is for your student to develop an understanding of what’s actually happening behind the math so that they can apply their learning to new concepts later on down the road, and eventually have confidence to use what they know to figure out something new in mathematics. At first, our work will be hands-on and include a lot of modeling. In time, they'll be able to transfer that understanding to using algorithms and tricks… and they’ll be able to explain how and why those things work.

While I love the work that I do, I miss working directly with students and seeing those beautiful lightbulb moments. Therefore, I've decided to offer tutoring services so that I can support the students in my community and get that little dose of teaching that I miss!

My teaching experience has been in WCSD and at a local public charter. I am highly trained in the current curriculum that they district uses. This ensures that the work your student does with me will transfer to the work they're doing in their classroom.

About the lesson

I specialize in teaching 4th and 5th grade mathematics. My teaching focuses on developing a deep, conceptual understanding of the math concepts your child is learning. I will not simply teach tips, tricks, and algorithms to get them through their next test or unit.

My teaching is based on the CRA (concrete, representational, abstract) method of instruction. This means I will use manipualtives to help your child make sense of a concept and then slowly build on that work to move them toward success with a written procedure. I will include games and real life scenarios into my instruction so that your child is excited to learn and sees the greater purpose in the work they are doing.

A typical lesson will begin with a warm up that encourages deep thinking but is open ended enough that any student can feel successful. This will give me information about what your student knows and needs to know related to the concept. Then, we will move on to an engaging lesson with an intentionally set learning target that moves your student closer to our overall goal. The end of the lesson will conclude with a game or engaging reflection that gives me insight to your child's progress and where we need to go next.
