About Phillip
I explain to my students how my background in social science and mathematics brings more life to math concepts that I teach. I have a B.S. degree in mathematics, M.A. and PhD degrees in mathematical sociology (U. Colorado), and post-doctorate certificate in mathematics education (Johns Hopkins). I focus on mathematics communication in the classroom between myself and each student, myself and groups of students, and between groups of students that facilitate maximal learning and understanding of math concepts and methods.

I explain math concepts using ordinary language first and then bring them into mathematical concepts and methods. I communicate with my students at each step of introducing a math concept and work to establish a comfort level with my students so that they feel ownership of a concept and a procedure.
I employ algebra concepts while teaching geometry and geometry when teaching algebra 2 and trigonometry, and all these disciplines while teaching pre-calculus in an embroidered manner.
