About Melissa
I have been teaching art ever since I was a graduate student, beginning in 1995, and I taught full time at Hendrix College for the past 17 years. I also taught freshmen and senior seminar courses at the college, which gave me years of experience advising first-time college students in their academic and career goals, as well as advising senior art majors in how to develop a coherent body of work based on a central theme. Art is my greatest joy to make, and to teach!

I teach lessons online from my home studio. I give technical instruction and demonstrations first, then "small-bite" practice sessions before giving an assignment to complete. I like to incorporate relevant art history into my lessons as well. A typical lesson plan would include a warm-up, a demonstration, and then guided practice, finishing with a take-home assignment. What sets me apart is that I customize my assignments to the student's interests and goals. This makes learning much more engaging and fun. The lessons are for young adults and older who want to learn a new creative technique or refine a skill.

Melissa is a skilled artist in multiple formats with a strong sense of 2D composition. I had the pleasure of learning under Melissa for the entire four years of my undergraduate degree, where her expertise and guidance strengthened both my drawing skill and artistic vision. She understands the various backgrounds and learning styles of her students, meeting them at their level and skill set. Melissa also excels at providing varied lesson structures that engage with multiple perspectives to encourage artistic exploration and technical prowess. All-in-all, I highly recommend Melissa to any artist seeking to explore and improve their craft.
Melissa guided and mentored me through four years of art school. She was the person who introduced me to printmaking, which ended up becoming my major. She spent so much of her time teaching me attention to specific details in printmaking and making sure i was aware of all the possible processes to create the image that I wanted. She is highly skilled at teaching drawing and printmaking, as well as being a color and texture guru. She works with materials in unique and beautiful ways, often involving community in her projects, creating a sense of oneness with the world and the people around her.
Melissa started as one of my college orientation class teachers and is now one of my most valued mentors and friends. Anyone would be so lucky to have the opportunity learn from and know her.Melissa is able to communicate well with a novice textile printing as I was. I got a lot from the 6 session course.
Melissa Gill was a supportive and inventive professor that guided me through 3 wonderful years of my college career! She always made time to nurture my interests and work with me to achieve my learning goals.
Melissa is an extremely experienced artist and art professor who is able to teach many diverse mediums and offer insight into historical and contemporary art. She is also an incredibly nice person who is a joy to work with.
