About Maxfield

初めまして!(Hajimemashite!) My name is Max, and I am currently teaching Japanese at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia! I lived in Japan on and off for three years while teaching English to pre-school through junior high school. In the process, I learned that I love teaching and decided to be a certified Japanese teacher in the U.S.!

I have been learning Japanese, almost exclusively on my own, for over 15 years, so I am up to date on all of the most valuable language learning tools available to date. My interests include learning other languages (right now I'm learning Korean!), health and nutrition, and, if I have time, anime and video games (especially Dance Dance Revolution).

I'm always looking for the latest and greatest trends in language learning. Right now I am looking into how to use AI to aid in language learning, especially as a way of helping students begin to understand "authentic" (non-learner focused materials e.g. created by Japanese people for Japanese people) materials. I have found that the software that makes phenomenal use of AI in this way, and use it myself to further improve my own language abilities!

I'm here to teach you that you can do hard things. I'm not just teaching you Japanese, but teaching you HOW to learn Japanese! The tools available to learn a language are constantly evolving and it can be extremely difficult to keep up, but I'm here to show you that you CAN learn Japanese! Small daily habits and consistency are than anything else when it comes to language learning, so if you follow the plan I lay out and don't give up, you are guaranteed success! 一緒に頑張りましょう!(Let's do our best! You got this!)

Details

You will want to purchase or obtain the third editions of the Genki 1 and 2 textbooks to follow along with the class. You will also need a handheld whiteboard and dry erase marker to practice writing sentences and Kanji characters as we learn them.

If you are willing to spend a little more money for something you can use outside of class, I highly recommend looking in the software "Migaku", as it is an all inclusive flashcard creation tool and provides all of the tools you need to start actually studying from authentic Japanese material. This is the best investment you can make outside of private lessons for your Japanese learning, so please check it out.
