About George

Hey! Name's George, and I know a little bit more about something than you do. Let's sort it.

Recently graduated from the Uni of Sheffield with an 1st class MChem degree. On the course I took many modules covering most areas of chemistry, so it's what I'm best at! I thought Biology, Maths and Physics were pretty cool so I took those at A-Level and that means I can teach you about those things too. I have a strong background in analytical and laboratory based Chemistry also (as seen in my CV), so if that's something you want help with as well, no worries!

I tutored an A-Level student for Biology and Chemistry at my old college whilst at uni, and that's what first got me into tutoring. Since then I've helped younger Uni students at my Uni by tutoring and taking notes for them, and now here I am.

About the lesson

I base my tutoring mainly on how I was taught at school - I present an idea/topic/subject with the aid of a whiteboard (if you're thinking wow, who has a whiteboard at home etc, pen and paper is just fine!). Then we talk about it to cement it in your head, and I urge you to be as honest as possible about what you may not understand, then I can think of new ways to explain it to you.

This part is really important to me, because something I didn't have at school was a good relationship with my teacher, but I think that's paramount to being able to learn things! On this note, I'm a firm believer that understanding fundamental concepts is so much more valuable than passing an exam, because it makes you a more curious and interested person mind you, but also because it makes exams and problem solving easier.

What we'll do after talking about the work, is do some questions. This is easier if the questions are say, maths-based because there is always a correct solution. Sometimes, with subjects such as biology, answers or core principles are much more drawn out and often relate to just knowing it off by-heart, so for these things I find it better for us to talk about them more. For practical work, obviously I can't start setting up experiments wherever I go, but experiments are always based on theoretical knowledge first so we'll talk about that, then look at the real-life implications and how they change the theory.

Finally, we'll round off hitting home the core principles - the things that, if you know but don't know the other things, you might still be able to use them to solve a problem.
