About Luke
I began tutoring A-level students in 2009, became a mentor for undergraduates in 2010, and began running workshops and research seminars in 2011. Between group tutoring and 1:1 mentoring, I've probably supported around 80 people. All dissertations and essays that I've supported learners to structure have been awarded firsts or high 2:1s, and following my group courses most students found some improvement in their grades. As I focus a lot on developing learners research skills and methods, this improvement tends to last beyond the initial tutoring, and to help them develop further into their academic careers.
I have extensive experience of working with disabled students, and students who speak English as their second language; and am happy to adjust how I tutor to meet any access needs

Hi everyone,
Philosophy, politics, and literary studies can be some of the most exciting and enlightening things to study; providing us with insights into the inner workings of human society, lenses through which we can understand the world anew, and the ability to think critically about ourselves and the world around us. They can also be an absolute nightmare for someone trying to find a way into the discourse for the first time. Introductory guides and courses can often be too simplistic to be of much use, and everything else can seem like a salad of buzzwords, citations, and poorly defined concepts. What I try and do with my teaching is to provide people with the background knowledge andcritical thinking skills to engage meaningfully with the source material and to become better students and scholars.
This can take a number of forms dependent on what a student wants to get out of tuition. Previously, I've given courses on how to expand on research skills within the humanities, on how to situate essay topics in the history of philosophy and political theory, and on how to perform a close reading of philosophical texts. I've also worked extensively with students who are writing some of their first essays or their dissertations, and need some support to structure and present their argument. I pride myself on being responsive and flexible to the needs of my tutees, and of delivering support in a relaxed and (hopefully) fun manner.
I studied philosophy and literature and undergraduate level, and then completed an MA in philosophy with a particular focus on political theory; graduating with a distinction from Warwick in 2015. I have a number of publications in political journals, and am able to support learners with writing style as well as academic content. I'm available to travel for tutoring sessions, and my DBS certificate can be made available on request. All rates will be negotiable, as times are pretty hard for everyone right now and I don't believe it's fair for people to not get support due to low finances.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Luke is experienced in a wide field of philosophy and due to his background knowledge he is able to familiarize himself with new schools of thought quite effortlessly. He has plenty of experience teaching philosophy: During his Master’s he successfully lead a tutoring class on Kant’s Metaphysics for undergrads. Furthermore, he has run several reading groups on political philosophy.
Luke regularly discusses my research with me (I'm a postgrad philosophy student) and he proofread a number of my philosophy essays. I found his comments to be very insightful and he helped me to improve my work quite significantly.
In addition to his expertise, he is a very friendly, funny, open-minded and patient person. He is clearly enthusiastic about his work, which enables him to elate others. I definitely recommend him as a tutor.

Again, all rates are negotiable; so if you're in any kind of financial difficulty but do need help, get in touch and we'll see what we can work out.
As dissertation and thesis support are quite labour intensive, I'd rather agree those rates personally with students after discussing their project and what support they need.
