About Kat

In musical theatre in particular I appeared as "the Voice" in Antero Alli's "A Turbulence of Muses" - a narrator role which stitched the abstract and avant-garde into a thematic whole. I appear as "Tina" on the original cast recording of "Bite me a Little" which showed in the Fertile Ground Festival in Portland, OR.

I have written and directed two full length pieces of community-level musical theatre. "to Pass the Veil" has been converted into a novella which is available on Inkitt. "Unsung Heroes: a Labor Day Pageant" is a comedic send-up of mid-century American culture featuring revitalized folk music and heroes of the Labor movement. It is designed to precede a Star Spangled dinner.

I have appeared in and directed straight theatre and shorts of various lengths. I built a short-run piece entitle "the Left of Spring" which appeared on the main stage at Portland State University in the Choreographer's Showcase. This historical work of theatre al Improviso was the first of its kind to show in centuries - a short Commedia Ballet pulled straight from the era of the Harlequinade. An innovation in modern dance, the piece was contextualized with the use of a film-based set.

Let's face it - you already know your craft. That's not what this is about. The Director is (more or less) at the top of a hierarchy and must maintain distance from others involved in a project.

But it can be helpful to have someone to bounce ideas off of so that you do not look mad to others because you are talking out loud!

I know the feeling.

You don't need someone to order you around - that's what you do. You don't want to burden your theatre friends with work you are not paying them to do. It is inappropriate to build this type of rapport with an assistant director because it might impact the show. That's where I come in.

I have significant stage experience going back to age 11 and I have served in every department in theatre. My experience includes both religious and secular environments.

Hire me on as early in the process as you think to do so - I will be with you every step of the way. My rates for this are on the low side because I would rather see more excellent theatre and fewer burned-out stage leaders in the world.

Expect that I will primarily listen to you about what is working and not working and reflect that back at you. I will also issue you self-care activities if I see that this is something you need. I will give you advice if you indicate for it - such as "This is something you should delegate to your..."

In rare cases I may perform unusual feats of Dramaturgy if a show requires this for its survival.

And make no mistake - a theatre run is a living thing in its own right as far as I know. If you cannot accept this as a thought then you will have already stopped reading by the time you get to this point in the ad.

Occasionally an assistant director or first-timer might want my services. This can be a little more dangerous as assignments go, but I'm willing to risk it for the right person.

My services are engaged by the hour, but after the first free "lesson" if you have decided to continue I am assuming I am in it for the duration. Make sure to mention if you are trying to make some other arrangement. I will be asking you what this commitment is during the first session, so make sure you have show dates ready by that point.
