About Kiya
I am currently a junior at James Madison University studying Political Science, with minors in History, Social Justice Studies, and Russian Studies. I have completed my History minor and developed a strong academic background across history, politics, and society. I also work as a substitute teacher, which has given me experience working with students of different ages, learning styles, and academic needs. As a current college student, I understand how frustrating it can be when material does not immediately click or when a class feels overwhelming. I am patient, organized, and approachable, and my goal is to create a comfortable environment where students feel confident asking questions and working through material at their own pace.

My approach to tutoring history is focused on making the material easier to understand rather than simply memorizing names, dates, and events. I help students see the bigger picture by breaking down complex topics, explaining cause-and-effect relationships, creating timelines, and connecting historical events to politics and today's world. Lessons are personalized to what each student needs, whether that means reviewing class material, preparing for an exam, working through readings, improving essays, or developing better study strategies. I also use practice questions and discussion to make sure students can explain concepts in their own words.
As a junior at JMU majoring in Political Science, with a completed minor in History and minors in Social Justice Studies and Russian Studies, I bring an interdisciplinary perspective to history. I am happy to work with middle school, high school, AP, and introductory college-level students.
