About Ben
Hi there, I’m Ben! I’m currently a third year Philosophy & Italian student at the University of Oxford. I’ve been passionate about philosophy since I was 15, when I read Aristotle’s ‘Poetics’. From then I performed at a high level in various competitions, placing fifth in the Hungarian National Philosophy Olympiad, and winning Gold at the Baltic Sea Philosophy Essay Event in which students from over 140 countries take part. In my first year I performed best in the philosophy first year exams in college, receiving a distinction and a prize. I have tutored many students in philosophy and, more generally, the Oxbridge application process with over 70+ hours of experience.

I offer lessons at high school, sixth form, and undergraduate level.
I believe that the best way to learn philosophy is to engage actively with the ideas themselves; to understand why they are important, where people disagree, and of course which ones are true! A mix of active back-and-forth argumentation with the student, light prompts and questions, and reading extracts together is, I've found, a great way to not only learn philosophy, but remember it.
Our focus and goals for learning depends on what you want to get out of our sessions!
- If you are applying to a strong university, we focus on building a profile, motivational letters, and entrance exam and interview preparation.
- If you want to write better essays, we focus on sentence structure, syntax, forming arguments, and formulating points of view clearly and precisely.
- If you want to understand certain themes and ideas in philosophy, we will look at a mix of historical and contemporary sources to see the main puzzles and theories in a given area.
- If you want to understand a certain philosopher, we will look at primary sources and then secondary liturature. We will learn how to interpret historical texts and put them into context.
- If you want a mix of the above, all the better!
