About Thomas

Inspiration, imagination, and creativity:
My teaching aims for these three, they are the motor of activity.
We need to identify what excites us, what is relevant, what has meaning.

Perfection is often the main hindrance for students, suppressing imagination and creativity.

Creativity needs free exploration, thinking through making, the first stroke on an empty page is the crucial one.

I am a passionate educator and a specialist in educating international students, and over the past ten years I have directed a three-pathway programme tailored for internationals.

I teaching at the School of Architecture of Newcastle University for several years on all stages. My current contribution to design studios and stage 1, 2 and 3 and graduation projects.

As an architect I remain active and over decades I contributed to a long list of realised projects, from public and educational architecture to large scale industrial buildings in UK and abroad.

About the lesson

I am an experienced and enthusiastic architect (ARB), lecturer (associate lecturer at Newcastle University) and pedagogue in architecture with more than two decades experience as practicing architect, and two decades in architectural education. I offer individually tailored tutorials based on individual needs for all stages and students of all architecture schools in UK except Newcastle University. The preferred format is online via ZOOM or in person at an agreed location in Newcastle upon Tyne.

During the first session (which is for free) we will carefully analyse your needs and expectations. On this basis you will receive a tailored and structure lesson plan in reflection of your study assignments and design projects. Sessions last usually between 60 - 90 minutes, depending on the complexity. Sessions are engaging and practical. I tutor through demonstration, concrete suggestions and relevant precedents.
Session are agreed session by session on "pay as you go" basis, with the payment due after each session. This allows you to end or extend any time without further obligations.

My approach is informed by extensive experience of teaching international students as well as home students, and the specific needs of architecture students navigating through the complexity of studies in architecture.

With more than a decade as selector for application portfolios for architecture courses, I can provide guidance and support for successful portfolios to all stages. Mentoring and mental support, encouragement and confidence training are aspects, relevant to all students but particularly to internationals.
