About Toby

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a teacher I was Head of music at a top Ballet School in London for four years teaching GCSE music, musical theatre, singing, music theory and worked as an accompanist for ballet classes. During this time I also prepared students for music college auditions and performances on the professional stage. I have also worked for Italia Conti, City Academy and have done workshops with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gareth Malone. At my private practise I teach a variety of students with differing ages and abilities.
As a performer I have sung in London's West End, across the UK and US and have toured as far as Japan with opera companies, choirs and in cabaret. I like to approach music teaching holistically and make it as engaging as possible. As a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and the Association of the Teachers of Singing, I regularly attend seminars and workshops on teaching methods and voice science, ensuring that my knowledge is current and up to date.

I have an enhanced and up to date DBS certificate,

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained in Cardiff with Italian tenor Osvaldo Valente, at Cardiff University, and with Scott Johnson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I have also worked with some of the world's best singers, musicians and conductors.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the ISM, ATL and AOTOS

About the lesson

Hi, I'm an experienced, reliable and friendly teacher based in South London. I provide fun and engaging lessons for any level whether preparing for an exam or learning just for fun.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach singing, piano, guitar, music theory, & GCSE/ A level music. I enter students for graded exams with the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall including grade 5 theory. I am also able to provide coaching for audition or performance preparation. All ages and abilities are welcome.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a BMus (Hons) in music from Cardiff University, MMus in singing from Guildhall school of Music and Drama & PGCE in secondary music from Cardiff Metropolitan University (formally UWIC)

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 for an hour's tuition of Singing, Piano or Guitar, £35 an hour for music theory, £40 an hour for GCSE music and £50 an hour for A level music tuition. I can provide 30 minute instrumental/vocal lessons for £20.
I can travel to you if it is more convenient for no extra charge.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my home in Charlton but am happy to travel within a five mile radius.

- When are you available?

I am available Monday-Tuesday all day/eve and on weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and ability levels.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Graded exams, theory exams and GCSE/A level music exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I don't offer online tuition.
