About Laura

I'm Laura, I'm from Preston in the north-west and I love sociology. I love that it literally changes how you see the world and your life. I think sociology makes you a better human being as well as a deep thinker.

About the lesson

Hello, I'm Laura!

I've been teaching Sociology for over 14 years and I have taught History at AS Level too. I absolutely love both of my subjects and love opening my students' eyes to the world around them.

I studied at the University of Manchester and was so proud to graduate with a first-class degree in history and sociology. I went on to complete a teaching course at Edge Hill University.

I have been fortunate enough to work in three Outstanding colleges and teach 100s of students from all different backgrounds and with all different needs and personalities. The brilliant thing about sociology is that everyone has relevant experience to share and relate to. I am in my second year of tutoring alongside my teaching job which keeps me close to the latest developments.

The best part of my job is when students tell me that I have had an impact on them, and I see them go off to their dream destinations.

I have ten years' experience as an Examiner, Seed Examiner and Team Leader which has developed my expertise in exam guidance.

While exams can seem scary, I love de-constructing them with students and giving straightforward advice to help them manage those anxieties and perform at their best. I'm a big believer in developing skills in my sessions (as much as knowledge) and believe that both academic and general study skills are so important to student success. You can expect to study essay questions and work on paragraphing technique to develop your skills. I'll give you lots of feedback and model responses to guide you.

If you decide to work with me, I'll spend some time getting to know your starting point, goals and challenges you're facing. We will then come up with a plan to help you reach those goals focusing on your needs. We will identify your learning style and preferences. We tend to start with a recap of previous learning to warm
up, before going through a topic via question and answer or lecture style, as you prefer. Each lesson we will cover at least one exam question and I'll provide lots of useful exam and revision resources to meet you where you are at. There will definitely be a funny story or two from Laura's life story along the way!
