About Teka
I am a trained reproductive biologist with an emphasis on cell biology and transcriptomics of placenta, as well as broad expertise in genetic etiologies of human reproduction. I have extensive experience of state-of-the-art technologies such as cell culture, transcriptomics, nuclei/cell sorting, and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Currently, my focus is on transcriptional controls operating on placental trophoblast (PTB) differentiation and the emergence of PTB from pluripotent stem cells (PSC). In addition, I study the placental disease called preeclampsia (PE), using a unique resource, induced PSC (iPSC) and PTB stem cells (PTSC) derived from PE and healthy pregnancies. I have established nuclei isolation and fluorescent activated nuclear sorting (FANS) protocols. By these approaches, I am the first to report single nuclear transcriptome of PTB and uncovered previously unrecognized two kinds of syncytiotrophoblast (STB). Since December 2023, I have been working as a Research Scientist with Dr. Michael Roberts, Curator Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Missouri, and Dr. Laura Schulz from the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, under an NIH-funded grant. Previously, I served as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the same group from March 2020 to November 2023, focusing on human trophoblast development and transcriptome analysis using single nucleus RNA sequencing. I earned my Ph.D. in reproductive genetics from the University of Science and Technology of China, where I worked with Professor Qinghua Shi under the CAS-TWAS Presidents Fellowships Program. My research has resulted in 15 publications in high-impact journals and over 600 citations.
