About Katie

I am a trainee teacher of geography. I have taught at an all-boys grammar school and in a fully comprehensive school, where I have taught geography, history and religious studies to students aged 11-18. I am also an AQA examiner, marking GCSE Geography exam papers. I have experience of teaching all ages as a part of my role as a Royal Geographical Association Ambassador, where I planned and delivered workshops to get students excited about Geography. I attended Plymouth University for three years where I got my degree in Geography. I like to compliment my geography studies with travelling to experience new places and their cultures.

I have a passion for travelling the world and constantly learning new things to share with everyone in my teaching. I believe that adventure is key to sparking a love for geography and discovering new things about the world is key to being a member of our global community, as it allows us to be able to create a future generation that understands relationships between different cultures and how our planet works in order to preserve and enhance the future for all.

My teaching methodology includes; personalised learning to ensure every student is able to access learning despite their ability and all students are challenged to achieve their full potential; retrieval practices to ensure topics previously taught are not forgotten; not teaching more than four new ideas in one class to ensure these areas are thoroughly covered and understood completely so that students can recall their learning easily in the future when required.

The nature of my subject allows me to base my classes on case studies and current affairs to relate learning to students and real-life experiences. This allows for lots of discussions to share experiences of the student that they can apply to their work to help them remember new concepts.

I approach each topic by assessing students prior knowledge through questioning and discussion. This is followed by developing this understanding through my teaching methodology and providing effective feedback to students, which they can respond to in order to make instant improvements. This is then followed by practising applying what you have learnt to exam-style questions in order to be able to write high-quality answers that will achieve the higher grades. Students will be given structures they can follow to write a good answer, will understand what is required in different styles of question and will understand how they can improve their answers from the feedback provided. Consistently practising these helps build confidence for exams and improves students answers.

An example of one of my lessons;
- Starter activity to measure prior knowledge
- discussion to develop prior knowledge and apply to the lesson topic.
- explanation of the key concept
- activities to embed learning and assess understanding of the key concept
-feedback on performance in activity to identify how students can improve
- activity to build on learning and develop understanding further.
- collaboratively applying to learn to exam style questions
- marking together, giving live feedback so that students can make instant improvements.
- activity to unload everything they have learn and recall previous learning that can be applied.
