About Madison
With 7 years of experience as a jazz piano tutor and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance, I’ve dedicated my teaching career to helping serious students grow into confident, expressive, and technically refined musicians. My specialty is preparing students for demanding conservatory programs such as Berklee, Juilliard, and other top-tier jazz institutions. I take a holistic approach to instruction, blending technical foundation, theoretical insight, and creative exploration in every lesson. I believe that strong technique is essential, but that true artistry comes from learning to communicate through sound. This is why I spend as much time on improvisation, personal expression, and tone shaping as I do on scales, voicings, and repertoire. Over the years, I’ve helped students understand complex harmony, refine their rhythmic feel, and develop improvisational fluency through transcription, listening, and guided experimentation. In addition to technical growth, I emphasize musical confidence—especially for auditions and live performance. I help students prepare polished pieces, explore effective phrasing, and learn how to manage performance pressure. Each student receives fully personalized instruction based on their long-term goals, strengths, and musical identity. I am passionate about guiding committed musicians toward advanced artistry and giving them the tools to excel in any professional or academic jazz environment.

My approach to teaching piano is based on building confidence through clear, repeatable habits. I help students face performance anxiety with calm breathing and easy warm-up routines. Stage presence comes from feeling prepared, so we practice walking on stage and taking a bow. Memorization is taught using patterns and small sections. Exam takers receive focused support in timing, clarity, and consistency. Church musicians learn how to prepare hymns, transitions, and service cues. I guide students through recital and audition preparation with practice plans that reduce stress. We do run-throughs so they feel familiar with the performance moment. I believe confidence grows from preparation. My lessons stay positive, steady, and supportive. I want students to feel proud when they perform. Their playing becomes expressive and strong. They learn to share music with confidence.
