About Lucas
Born in São José dos Campos (Brazil) and raised in São Paulo, his state's capital, Lucas de Souza Martins is a PhD student in History at Temple University (Philadelphia, PA) where he focuses his studies on Latin America-U.S. relations after the Cold War. He also holds a master's degree in U.S. History from Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA).
In the past two years, he served as an international affairs aide for Georgia State Representative Park Cannon (D-58), the youngest black legislator at the State General Assembly, and as a graduate assistant fellow at the Carter Center's Democracy Program where he assisted this organization with its electoral expert mission in Bogotá, Colombia in 2022. Also in Atlanta, Lucas conducted research on political and social issues for the City of Atlanta, the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce of the Southeast (BACC-SE), and Fair Count, an NGO founded by the Honorable Stacey Abrams.
Beyond his American experience, Lucas has a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Mackenzie Presbyterian University (São Paulo, Brazil). In his home country, he served as a Press Officer at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Brazilian Federal Senate. Martins also worked for the national news desk of Veja magazine, the largest weekly publication in Latin America.
