About Evan

I've studied with a variety of trombone and brass teachers all over the country over the past 18 years that can be summed up as some of the best teachers and performers in the world and I've continuously pushed myself to be the best performer and teacher that I can be. I've taught students around the country both in private studios, music shops, and as a graduate assistant at universities.

I have a Master of Music in trombone performance from the University of Arkansas and 4 years of experience in a doctoral program towards a Doctor of Musical Arts in trombone performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado Boulder.

About the lesson

I'm very flexible in my approach due to experience with all ages and skill levels. The first lesson is usually a consultation to get to know the student and understand what they expect out of lessons and how I can help them, and I believe music lessons shouldn't be a scary or stressful experience.

Generally I try to build music-related skills up from a fundamental basis, making sure the student understands both why a skill is important as well as how it fits into the larger picture.

Topics can range from music reading, tone production, articulation, introduction to repertoire or etudes, even to the basics of practice itself and how to structure an effective practice session. One of the most important aspects of playing a brass instrument and a general focus I have during lessons is that the student doesn't overwork or overblow the instrument and is able to play efficiently as well as with good sound, good time, and good intonation.
