About Fauzia

I received a BA in English from Smith College with a minor in Government. I also have an M.P.A. in Public Administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In addition, I am certified as a TESOL teacher.
I have a wide range of knowledge of English - both language and literature. I excel in writing, reading comprehension, proofreading, and essay editing. I am also well versed in political science and history - American, European and World. I am very aware of current events and how they relate to academics and the patterns of the past. I can also help with essay editing, research projects, and SAT/ACT English test prep.
I am currently working with Varsity Tutors, and have been for the past year. I have taken their specific subject tests and am certified to tutor in about 10 different areas. Please read ahead to see more extras I bring to tutoring - what sets me apart.

I am also currently tutoring through DaDa ABC, teaching English online to Chinese children of all ages. I utilize TPR in this position, which serves to break the ice and create a fun atmosphere – necessary to bridge the challenge of not being in the same room.

About the lesson

Specifically, I would work with the student’s existing curriculum and help them with their assignments. From that point, I would go beyond with related subject matter to further expand their knowledge, ease, and grasp. I would design lesson plans tailored to their specific needs and likes – everyone is different. I strongly believe that teaching is best-done one-on-one and facilitated by back and forth conversation - where the student and I work as a team. I have worked with students in all levels – elementary, middle and high school. I am comfortable with all ages.
I tutor students in their homes, in libraries or other public places, and online. I can provide a background check done by Checkr on September 4, 2018. Should you want to contact me directly, my rates are much more affordable when I don't have to go through an agency.

I work best one on one, and in small groups with 2-3 students maximum. I work very hard and at my own expense to find online support materials and exercises for my students based on their specific needs and wants. Lesson preparation is unpaid, time-consuming but very important. I have had success in seeing my students improve and would be happy to share examples. I have memberships in at least 10 different websites.

I like having an emphasis on independent thought and critical skill development. I see tutoring as a path to grow both professionally and personally. Both the student and I learn during the process. I will bring my knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to create positive relationships with both the children and their parents.

Personally, I like to read, exercise and travel. I am very interested in different cultures and current events. You could call me a NPR junkie, but I am definitely not stereotypical.

Details

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy and will charge $25 per hour of the missed lesson. Any distance over 7 miles one way will require an extra surcharge of 50 cents a mile. I will offer incentives for successful referrals.
