About Alison K
Teaching requires knowledge, eloquence, patience, curiosity, tolerance, and empathy. I believe I have these traits but most of all empathy. My three degrees in literature, and linguistics and lifelong love of learning is something I have tried to pass on to my students. I believe I have done this many times with thousands of students over a period of more than three decades.

I have devoted my career to teaching students of all age groups to adults. Much of my teaching was university level. However, I have taught students from all over America and all over the world, lived in several Asian countries and now am back in America, but semi-retired from full-time work. However, I still love teaching and want to contribute to the education and learning of anyone wanting to study and learn. I have created lesson plans for many different kinds of students and always adapt them to the specific interests of the student. This student-centered approach has served both students and me because the most important aspect of successful learning is basing the lesson on the interest of the learner. It is also essential that the content of the lessons not be too difficult or too easy. I want to challenge but not overwhelm the learner. The following is a lesson for a child ages 6 to 8. For an 8-year-old or a fairly proficient but still basic reader, let’s take Dr. Seuss’ “Horton Hears a Who.” I strongly support reading aloud, page by page, for developing readers, especially with books that play with sound. First, the student reads the first paragraph, stopping only if there are problems. At the end of a paragraph or two, we pause for questions, either from me or the student. We might discuss the text or relate it to the child’s personal knowledge or previous reading or film experience. New words are explained and practiced in new contexts—of the student or suggested by me. At times, I may also read short passages with the student, followed by questions and discussions. When possible, both reading and films might be used. First reading, then a short section of a film. The lesson above could be adapted to any age and any subject. Of course, an adult would require an adult text—fiction or nonfiction—and tailored to his or her reading level. For fiction, short stories with simple language but adult content are often useful and fun. Nonfiction is better for those not so drawn to fiction. The main approach is based, as stated, on proficiency and interest. The lessons are adapted continuously to what the learner wants and enjoys but still aiming at skills of many kinds required for literacy: vocabulary, grammatical awareness, practice with literal and inferential meaning, idioms, metaphor, etc. That is, all the language needed for comprehension of written texts. Writing based on reading is useful if the student wants to develop writing skills too. This will greatly reinforce reading fluency.

My basic rate is $25 per hour. If a student will commit to ten hours of instruction online, I will do this for $200. The same rate will apply for ten hours of instruction at my home in Franklin. If I travel to deliver the lesson to help cover the cost, I ask for $5 each time I travel. I limit my travel distance to 35 miles each way. With travel, ten hours of instruction will be $250, but I can travel only three days a week and not on weekends. I must teach at least 3 hours when I travel, to make it worth the travel time. I will try to provide materials myself but may ask for students to buy special supplementary materials on a voluntary basis. (That is, if they want to purchase a book or video, etc.) Otherwise, the reading (or other) materials will come from me. An additional note: Please text me before calling, and send me your number, so I will know who is calling. Once I get your number, I will call you back at the day/time you prefer.
