About Tom

About Me

Hi! I recently graduated with a first-class degree in history from UCL, where I placed first in my cohort of 190 students and won a place on the Dean’s List. My interests include the history of political thought, the history of philosophy, early modern British, European and American history, and the study of modernism and modernity.

I was awarded an academic scholarship to Winchester College, where I was head pupil. I gained 9 A*s at GCSE and 4A*s at Pre-U – an A Level equivalent – in History, English Literature, German and Mathematics.

Aside from my studies, I enjoy reading and playing cricket. I am also a keen musician, and I play violin and piano to diploma standard. I appeared on University Challenge in my first year as an undergraduate student, helping the UCL team to achieve the highest score on the series for four years.

I have lived in Germany and speak fluent German. I have also travelled widely in Europe, Asia, and North and Central America.

Tutoring Experience

I have extensive experience tutoring History, English, German and Mathematics, and can also teach other subjects including Latin, Philosophy and History of Art.

I have offered advice on personal statements to students who have gone on to win places at prestigious UK universities including Oxford, UCL, LSE and King’s College London.

I would happily use my experience of passing Winchester College’s academic scholarship exams to help students applying for places and scholarships at top UK independent schools. In addition, I can offer help to students taking the American SAT, in which I scored 2390 out of a possible 2400.

My first priority is to establish each student’s individual needs. The initial session will therefore discuss a student’s aims, strengths and weaknesses, and work with them to develop a timetable for the following weeks and months that will best achieve their goals.

The student must be aware of the need to satisfy the examination board’s criteria for a successful answer. Although some details may differ depending on the exam board, all essay subjects require certain core skills:
• a strong command of grammar and syntax;
• the ability to argue coherently and precisely, and to use evidence persuasively;
• an understanding of how to plan and structure an effective essay.

These skills – undoubtedly the foundation of a good grade – are often taught in an unexciting way. I try to balance repetition with enjoyment, using imaginative writing exercises to develop essay technique and unusual, engaging texts that the student will likely not have encountered in the classroom as the basis of source/textual analysis questions. From here, the student will be in a position to tackle longer coursework essays and time-limited, exam-style questions.

I aim to help each student think as independently and as imaginatively as possible, thereby helping them to approach their subject with enthusiasm and passion. In my experience, students learn best when the lesson dissolves effortlessly into a conversation or a debate. I look forward to leading intellectually stimulating sessions that help students achieve their potential.
