They say if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. That's my approach to tutoring. When I feel the student has the appropriate level of understanding, I take a step back and encourage the student to answer questions by him/herself When the student wants to check whether he/she got the answer right, I teach them to check over their working and answer thoroughly so that they can tell me with confidence, "This is my answer". I find that this way the content becomes a part of the student; it becomes the student's own knowledge.
I like to inspire my students through my love for my subject by giving anecdotal examples that relate what the student learns to real-life situations, which encourages him/her to invest more in what he/she is learning.
At the end of every session I create a space for the student to reflect on the lesson and give feedback, so that I can tailor the lessons to their specific needs. I also maintain regular communication with parents to keep them updated with their child's progress.
