About Sophia

I am a lover of biology with years of classroom and hands on laboratory experience. I believe that everyone is capable of tackling the complex subject matters that are covered in the study of the sciences, and not only understanding but excelling in the field. I have a structured, student-centered approach that follows the goals of the student and their coursework. In my initial pursuits of biology as a student, I struggled. Upon finding learning and studying techniques that worked for me, I soon thrived as a student and hope to transfer these skills to another student. I am dedicated to students' success through simplifying complex topics and making biology not only understandable but also enjoyable! I hope that my tutoring will aid in your academic success, but hopefully inspire a long lasting interest and appreciation for the subject.

About the lesson

As a biology tutor, my main approach to lessons is to make complex subjects more approachable using engaging, interactive teaching techniques such as real-world examples, visual aids, and problem solving. I find that this technique helps students to not only understand the subject matter but also apply their knowledge with ease. I begin with a review of what the student knows and what they want to learn or strengthen their knowledge of. When teaching a new subject, I find it necessary to break the topic down to smaller, less complex sections and correlate them alongside visual examples. After this, I engage in a discussion with a series of relevant questions to identify any remaining gaps with the subject matter. I then like to have the student summarize what they have learned and apply their newfound knowledge to real life settings or examples. I have many years of experience studying and practicing Biology, and acted as a STEM educator/counselor for adolescents enrolled in the summer programs at Harvard Medical School through the program HMS MedScience. I am capable of providing tutoring for young children through college aged students, with experience in Biochemistry as well.
