About Henry

I got A*s and 9s in GCSE maths, further maths, English language, English literature, biology, chemistry and physics and A*s in A Level maths, further maths and physics with an A in A Level computer science. I also have an overall 5 star rating on mytutor from 35 reviews.

After my A-Levels I took a gap year and worked as a junior software engineer at micro:bit where I helped to build their new website and write programs to automate tasks like accepting competition entries for their international engineering competition. I am now taking a year off after a completing the first year of Joint Maths and Computing and Imperial College London. At Imperial I have learned Java, Haskell and C while vastly improving my maths ability and knowledge. I now have a good grasp of calculus, analysis and linear algebra and have a year of rigorous practice writing proofs and solving complicated equations.

I love thinking of new ways to make learning more efficient for me and others and have read, while making detailed notes, many books on the subject. My favourites have been Ultralearning by Scott H Young, Deep Work by Cal Newport and Peak by Robert Pool. From these books I have developed a very adaptable approach to learning which will inform the lessons I hold and give my students clear and structured tasks to focus on their weak spots and consolidate what they have learned so they don't move on without becoming confident in what they have already covered.

I teach from KS3 up to A-Level, including US SAT content too. My lessons are typically an hour long but that can be flexible and I have given a lot of 2 hour lessons to students in need of help on specific topics quickly. I have been tutoring for over 3 years and have taught over 30 students, including students with dyslexia, ADHD and autism.

I start the first lesson by trying to get an initial idea of which areas the student is struggling in the most - subject topics but also confidence, exam skills, approach to questions etc - and then tailor my lessons around that. Often, the best approach will be to treat the session like a classroom lesson, beginning with 10-15 minutes of me teaching some content and discussing common misconceptions before setting increasingly complicated questions on that content until it is deeply understood by the student.

I do incorporate exam questions into my lessons as it is important for the student to know what they will face in their exams, and the questions can be useful when finding out which areas the student is struggling with. However, I generally prefer not to focus my lessons around exam questions, as this can be hard for a student to build on when answering different but similar questions. I aim to help my students get better at learning content and then applying that content to questions.

I will usually end my lessons with a long question that I expect the student to take up to 15 minutes to complete. This is to 'fill in the gaps' of their general knowledge on the content as small parts of a subject are often forgotten about when you focus on a specific topic in each lesson.
