About Mayleen

Hello! My name is Mayleen, and I am a student at Johns Hopkins University with several years of experience working with students of different ages and learning styles. I am passionate about helping students build both academic skills and confidence in their abilities.

Throughout my experience as a tutor and educational mentor, I have worked with students in subjects including mathematics, science, reading comprehension, study skills, and homework support. I have also worked with students who have diverse learning needs, including those who benefit from individualized instruction and alternative learning strategies.

I believe that learning is most effective when students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. My goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students can develop a deeper understanding of concepts rather than simply memorizing information. I am patient, organized, and committed to helping each student reach their academic goals.

As a current university student, I understand the challenges that learners face and strive to make complex topics easier to understand through clear explanations, practice, and real-world examples. Whether a student needs help catching up, improving grades, preparing for exams, or gaining confidence in a subject, I am dedicated to helping them succeed.

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor is centered on patience, adaptability, and building confidence. I believe that every student learns differently, so I adjust my teaching style to fit each student's needs, learning pace, and goals. Rather than simply providing answers, I focus on helping students understand the underlying concepts so they can apply them independently in the future.

A typical session begins with a brief review of previous material and identification of any areas of difficulty. We then focus on the day's topic, working through explanations and examples before transitioning to guided practice. As the student becomes more comfortable, I gradually reduce assistance and encourage independent problem-solving. I finish each lesson with a summary of key concepts and recommendations for further practice.

What sets me apart is my ability to make difficult concepts approachable and understandable. As both a tutor and a student myself, I understand the challenges learners face and strive to create a supportive, judgment-free environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. I am particularly skilled at identifying where a student is getting stuck and finding alternative ways to explain the material until it clicks.

I work with students across a variety of academic levels, including elementary, middle school, high school, and introductory college courses. My experience includes tutoring mathematics, science, reading comprehension, study skills, and homework support. I have also worked with students who have diverse learning needs and learning styles, adapting lessons to help each student succeed.
