About Ryan
I am pretty laid back and easy going. But don't let that fool you. I am definitely committed to helping my students excel and expecting them to put in the effort. What it does mean is that I am patient and understanding when mistakes are made, as long as effort is being applied. If motivation is the problem, it is often not because the student doesn't care, but because they lack confidence in their abilities or don't see the relevance in the material. I like to be approachable so that the students feel comfortable opening up or making mistakes so that I can help them.

My teaching style includes fostering confidence and independence in learners. Put another way, my goal isn’t only to teach the students the material so they can get an “A”. While good marks are still an objective, my real goal is encourage critical thinking and get them analyzing problems in a scholarly way, while instilling the confidence to tackle difficult problems. When confronted with a question or scenario for which they do not know the answer, a learner with these skills can dissect the challenge and work their way logically to a solution all on their own, even synthesizing new ideas as needed. This skill retains its value throughout and can be a major predictor of future success. I am also familiar with many of the biology courses at Kennesaw State and intricately familiar with the non-majors/nursing microbiology lecture and labs (since I taught them and was the lab course coordinator).
