About Joshua
I am a student of Mandarin Chinese for over 9 years, currently studying for a BA in Chinese at the University of Durham. I have spent many months in China's various cities over the years; I spent last summer studying at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. My vast, 5 years of experience in teaching ranges from 1-1 tutoring classes to groups of up to 35 in a classroom setting. In both cases many of my students have achieved A* grades at GCSE and the Cambridge Pre-U; most notably I was renowned for teaching students who were given detention in my Secondary School and elevating their grades, even to A* level as well.

I aim to teach any level of Mandarin Chinese ability from beginners to intermediate (GCSE to A-level, HSK 1-4). From experience, the best way to learn is through active discovery and participation. My lessons focus on giving students a small but challenging reading or listening task followed by a discussion on the topic, mostly in Chinese, followed by a small homework task designed to signpost the development of the course for memory. This technique has given me a reputation as a fun and engaging tutor that encourages dialogue and curiosity whilst giving me the tools to realise my students' potential at their own pace of learning.
