About Hugo

I am a graduate from the BA Japanese program at SOAS, University of London. Having also spent much time immersed in Japanese language and culture in Japan, I have a strong understanding and command of the language.

As a student who has gone through the process of learning Japanese from scratch, I understand exactly what is required in order for a student to become proficient at Japanese in a minimal amount of time. It is because I'm non-native Japanese speaker who has achieved fluency that I can give accurate and efficient lessons to kick-start YOUR learning in Japanese.

Many teachers will expect you to understand all components of the Japanese language and how to learn them. In truth, Japanese is an incredibly complex language to understand as a native English person, but with the correct guidance it is possible for this to be a very smooth process.

Personally I love to have a laugh, and as someone who has been interested in Japanese culture for as long as I can remember, I'm sure if you choose me as your tutor we will get along very well. I am also attentive and make sure I understand what the student requires in order to progress in their studies of Japanese.

Many people have come to me for guidance in learning Japanese before and have told me that my style of tutoring is very easy to understand. I also have experience of teaching English for 6 months in a formal setting whilst in Japan.

About the lesson

I give lessons to those who are completely new to the Japanese language but want direction from the very beginning, so that they can effectively self-study and become fluent without the need for constant teaching right up until fluency.

I am capable of delivering lessons that provide instruction on Japanese grammar, reading, writing, and listening. Of course, if you simply want to practice Japanese conversation I would be delighted to do so too.

As a complete beginner, you will be able to practice real Japanese straight away and you will also be able to understand how to get to grips with reading and writing too.

My lesson structure depends completely on what you want, however nothing is out of reach (within reason!). I am totally ready to work around the student and help you achieve all of your goals in Japanese.
