About Ali

Hello, I'm Ali — a mathematician, university teacher, and passionate tutor based in Nottingham & Loughborough.

I fell in love with mathematics at school thanks to a brilliant teacher who took the time to show me that maths isn't a memory test, but a way of thinking. That experience shaped everything I've done since: a BSc in Mathematics and Physics at Loughborough University, teacher training and a year teaching GCSE Maths in secondary schools, and now a PhD in Mathematical Sciences alongside my role as a University Teacher in Loughborough's Department of Mathematical Sciences.

What I care about most as a tutor is making students feel capable. So much of what holds young people back in maths and the sciences isn't ability — it's the quiet belief that they "just aren't a maths person." I've worked with dozens of students who arrived feeling exactly that way and left genuinely enjoying the subject, with the grades to match. I take real pride in that.

You can expect me to be patient, well-prepared, and properly invested in your child's progress. I plan every lesson in advance, keep clear records of what we've covered, communicate openly with parents, and always turn up on time. I have an enhanced DBS check and references available on request from both school and university roles.

If you'd like a friendly, no-pressure chat about what your child needs, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

My Background
I'm currently a University Teacher in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Loughborough University, where I lecture and tutor undergraduates, alongside completing my PhD in Mathematical Sciences. Before this, I taught as a secondary school Maths Teacher and taught GCSE classes at West Park School and Chellaston Academy. I've been delivering private 1-to-1 tuition since 2020, so I bring both school-classroom experience and university-level subject mastery to every lesson.

Who My Lessons Are For
I tutor students aged 13–19 preparing for GCSE and A-Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry across all major exam boards. I also support undergraduate students with university maths and physics modules.

My Teaching Approach
Every student starts with a free diagnostic session so I can pinpoint exactly where the gaps are, what their target grade is, and which exam board they're sitting. From there I build a personalised plan that mixes clear explanations from first principles, worked examples, guided problem-solving, and structured past-paper practice with mark-scheme analysis. I focus on building genuine understanding rather than rote memorisation — students leave knowing why things work, not just what to write.

Lesson Format
Lessons run for 60 minutes as standard, with 90-minute sessions available for A-Level students closer to exams. I tutor both in person around Loughborough and online via interactive whiteboard, and I provide follow-up notes and practice questions after every session.
