About Tom
I'm keen on academics, but otherwise I enjoy organising university welfare events, training with my rowing team, or going out with friends for a coffee.
I achieved 4 A*s at A-Level and 11 A*s at GCSE, as well as gold and silver awards for national chemistry, maths, and linguistics olympiads. I recently graduated from the Univeristy of Oxford with a BA in Philosophy and Linguistics. Next year, I will be studing for an MSc in AI and Data Ethics at the University of Edinburgh. I love my subject choice and can only hope that I see others find passion in their interests.
I spent 2 months teaching English in China to classes of students ranging from 6 to 17 years. This provided me a level of professionalism and experience which I have brought into my one-on-one classes for the past 3 years as a part-time tutor.
While I was a lot shyer when I was younger, I recognise how crucial your teens are for development, coming out of my shell and now even being labelled 'the extrovert'! Anxiety about school and friends can get in the way of this development, and so I hope to make my tutees a little bit more comfortable with the stress of their work.

I offer typically 1-hour long lessons, moving either step-wise through the curriculum or targeting what you find difficult. Engagement is key to learning, and so I try to question tutees as much as possible. This helps understanding of the content and active application to new situations. I can bring new resources to the lesson to supplement the student's class/homework.
At school, I volunteered to tutor younger years, and have also coached rowing to complete beginners, solely responsible for their safety and progression on the water. At Oxford, I have the opportunity to be taught by my own tutors, leading academics in their field, which has inspired me to try to offer a hopefully similar experience to my tutees.
