About Phoenix
I wasn’t always confident in school, and I did not always have a clear passion for a subject. That changed when my mum encouraged me to work hard over one summer, and from that point I developed a real love for maths. That interest in maths eventually led me to study physics, which is now my main academic passion.
Along the way, I was lucky to have some great teachers who encouraged my curiosity in STEM and helped me believe that difficult subjects could become manageable with the right support. I now want to do the same for other students, especially those who are not confident in maths or science and may feel like they “just can’t do it”.
I know what it feels like to need extra support, patience and time for a subject to properly click. Because of that, I understand that different students learn at different paces, and I aim to adapt my teaching so each student can build confidence without feeling rushed.
My aim as a tutor is to break down that mental barrier, build confidence and help students see that improvement is possible when topics are explained clearly and patiently.
At GCSE, I achieved a grade 9 in Maths and a grade 8 in Physics, followed by an A in both Maths and Physics at A-Level. I am currently studying Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham.

I’m Phoenix, a Physics student offering maths tutoring for Year 9–11 students, especially those who are not yet confident in maths and need extra support outside of school.
I particularly enjoy working with curious students, and I like to encourage them to ask “why?” rather than just memorising methods. My aim is to help students understand what they are doing, not just copy steps, as this is what lets them attempt those harder questions.
During my A-Levels, I was a Maths Ambassador at my school and tutored students of different levels in a GCSE maths support clinic. I also had difficulties with maths when I was younger, so I understand how frustrating it can feel when a topic does not click straight away. Because of that, I would like to support students who are trying to overcome similar difficulties and build confidence.
Different students need different approaches, so I usually begin by asking what the student feels weakest on. I then go through the key theory, build intuition for the concept, show how to answer example questions, and guide the student through practice questions. While they work, I encourage them to explain each step back to me, so I can check they understand why they are doing it and spot any gaps in their knowledge.
Lessons are typically 1 hour long and are suitable for students in Years 9–11, including those preparing for GCSE maths or wanting to strengthen their foundations over the summer.
