Find out more about Ross

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always had an interest in health and improving peoples heath and well-being. I have worked as a physiotherapist for 22 years and have a thirst for knowledge and self-development which I hope to pass onto my students. I first commenced private tutoring in 2000.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach all elements of physiotherapy that form components of degree and masters programmes. I also supervise PhD students. My specialist area is Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and I am also able to teach neurological and respiratory physiotherapy. I have taught Sports Science and Physiology and Sports Therapy at undergraduate and masters level. I also enjoy designing research projects and have supervised numerous student dissertations.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have no specific role model but appreciate all individuals who try to help people develop via education.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I do not think there is a specific recipe to be a good tutor as every subject and student that you work with is different. Therefore I would say adaptability and a thirst for knowledge are the key elements. I am hardworking, knowledgeable and enjoy helping students reach their maximum potential.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was a student the methods of teaching were very different and students were excepted to use self-directed learning far more frequently than they are today. For one French exam I bought a revision book and taught myself and ended up receiving a grade A. I remember the teacher was shocked and did not realise I had this level of language ability. This made me realise I had an aptitude for self-directed learning and that teachers needed to understand their individual students and their learning styles more effectively.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Healthcare development is subject to government funding and therefore the speed of research development is often not at the speed I would like it to be. This means that new innovations perhaps do not occur as quickly as the can and results in health inequalities.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I enjoy meeting new people from all over the world and hearing about the courses and aspirations and this allows me to enhance my own knowledge. I have done this via travel to other healthcare institutes and universities and via the internet.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I have vast experience in my subject area and have published and presented my work internationally. I generally enjoy learning and teaching.
