About Helina
I'm an engineer with a Master's in Materials Engineering from UBC (GPA 3.95) and a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta. During my graduate studies I worked as a teaching assistant, guiding undergraduates through lab work and technical concepts, and I've published three peer-reviewed papers in chemistry and engineering journals.
Since then I've worked as a process engineer, using chemistry, physics and math every day to solve real problems — which means I can show students not just how something works, but why it matters.
I'm patient, encouraging, and genuinely enjoy the moment a concept finally clicks. No question is too basic with me; I'd much rather you ask than quietly stay confused. I'm reliable, well-organized, and I take my students' goals seriously.
I teach in both English and Mandarin.

I hold a Master's in Materials Engineering from UBC and a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta, and I've taught undergraduates as a teaching assistant. My lessons are for high school students in chemistry, physics and math — including AP and exam prep — and first-year university chemistry.
Most students don't struggle with the math; they struggle because a concept never clicked, so everything built on it feels shaky. I find where the gap actually is and rebuild from there. For chemistry especially — moles, stoichiometry, bonding, thermochemistry — I help you see what's happening before we touch the calculation.
A typical lesson: we review what you're working on now, I explain the concept a few different ways until one lands, then we work problems together — first with me guiding, then with you leading while I check your reasoning. You'll leave with practice problems and a clear focus for next time.
What sets me apart is that I've used this material as a working engineer, not just studied it — so I can tell you why it matters and where it shows up in the real world. I'm patient and completely un-judgmental about questions. I teach in English and Mandarin.
