About Nigan

I’m Nigan, a Computer Science student at the University of Toronto. I graduated from Georges Vanier Secondary School in June 2026, so I took the same Ontario math, physics and computer science courses my students are taking now, and I remember what the tests and assignments are like.

I’ve worked as a lifeguard for the City of Toronto since 2023, a job where people count on you to be on time, alert and calm. Before that I spent five years in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, finishing as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class, and I was Vice-President of my high school’s student council. I bring the same reliability to tutoring: I show up prepared, I start on time, and I keep parents updated on how things are going.

I’m patient and easy to talk to. No question is too basic, and I’d rather explain something a third time than have a student nod along without understanding it. My goal is for students to leave each lesson able to solve problems on their own, not just follow along while I do them.

I start by finding out where the student is stuck, which is usually earlier than they think. A student struggling with quadratics in Grade 10 often has a gap in factoring or fractions from a year or two before, so I ask them to work through a problem out loud and listen for where the reasoning breaks. Then we fix that first.

I don’t lecture for long. I explain an idea in a few minutes, work one example, and then the student does the next one while I watch. If they get it wrong, I ask questions until they find the mistake themselves, because that’s the part they’ll remember on a test. For computer science, students write code from the first lesson. Reading about loops doesn’t teach you loops; debugging your own broken loop does. For physics, I spend a lot of time on setting up the problem (drawing the diagram, listing knowns and unknowns, picking the equation), since that’s where most marks are lost, not in the algebra.

A typical lesson

A one-hour lesson usually goes like this:

5–10 minutes: review of last session and any homework or school questions that came up during the week
15–20 minutes: the new concept, explained with one or two worked examples
20–25 minutes: the student solves problems on their own, starting easy and getting closer to test level, while I step in only when needed
5 minutes: a quick recap in the student’s own words and a few practice questions to try before next time

Before tests, the lesson shifts to timed practice with past-style questions and going over mistakes. For younger students, I keep the blocks shorter and switch activities more often.

What sets me apart

I’m a Computer Science student at the University of Toronto, and I graduated from an Ontario high school in June 2026, so I took these same courses very recently. I remember what the tests look like, which topics teachers stress, and where the jump from one grade to the next catches people off guard, especially Grade 11 to Grade 12 math and physics.

I’m also used to being responsible for younger people. Students from elementary school through Grade 12, following the Ontario curriculum:

Math: elementary and middle school math, Grade 9 and 10 (MTH1W, MPM2D), Functions (MCR3U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U)
Physics: Grade 9 and 10 science physics units, SPH3U, and SPH4U
Computer science: beginners of any age learning to code, plus ICS3U and ICS4U, mainly in Python
