About Sam

Hi! I'm Sam, a University of Toronto graduate with a degree in Astronomy, Physics, Statistics, and Math. I am really passionate about STEM subjects despite their challenge, and I love supporting students through their STEM career. I have five years of experience tutoring students in math and physics so I am well prepared to tutor you for your classes, work, or for general interest! In high school, I served as the Admin Coordinator on the executive team of my school's Peer Tutoring Council as well as tutoring students for periodic and drop-in tutoring sessions. I have also taught physics lessons as a camp counselor at the Ontario Science Centre camp. Besides tutoring and my university courses, I was the President of the U of T Physics Student Union where I have worked for four years. I also conduct research at the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Math and physics are all about building knowledge on concepts you already know. My goal is to strengthen my student's foundations while developing the skills needed for class, prep for an exam, or learn just for fun. I tutor high school and university level math, physics, statistics, astronomy, Python programming, and other similar subjects. My lessons are all about helping the student learn concepts at a fundamental level and bridging the gaps in their understanding. A typical lesson consists of us breaking down problems into steps and building confidence at each stage. We will also work through practice problems that I custom-build to help the student understand specific ideas better. As a licensed tutor from Licensed to Learn, I understand how to set up tutoring sessions that are conducive to learning. I believe that establishing a connection between the student and the tutor is important so the tutor can foster an environment that reflects the student's learning style.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I have been interested in math and physics from a young age. Ever since I first heard about the fascinating laws of quantum mechanics and the awe-inspiring scale of the cosmos, I was hooked on learning more and more. Solving complex math and physics problems can be incredibly rewarding, which consistently draws me in to learn more!
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I'm passionate about math and physics because they provide the tools to explore and explain some of the most fascinating and complex phenomena in the universe. Whether it’s the unimaginable power of a black hole or the satisfying elegance of complex analysis, math and physics never fail to amaze me.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love teaching and helping students grow! When I see a student understand a concept they haven’t yet, or when a student tells me I helped them ace a test, I feel so motivated to tutor more. With years of experience in tutoring and science communication, I’ve developed a talent for explaining complex ideas in clear, intuitive ways. What makes me a "Superprof" is my ability to adapt to each student and help them truly understand the material, not just memorize it.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

One of my biggest inspirations was my Grade 11 physics teacher, who had a real gift for making lessons both fun and memorable. He engaged the whole class and made every concept feel approachable, no matter how difficult it seemed at first. His teaching style showed me how powerful a good explanation can be.
  • What are your keys to success?

My success is your success, so being adaptive to each student's individual learning style and needs is the most important thing to me. I believe that when students feel understood and supported, they thrive. This means understanding what my student already knows and what they struggle with, along with understanding how they learn new concepts. Some students like to see a rigorous explanation each step of the way, some prefer a more intuitive approach, and some learn through lots of practice. I also provide practice problems for students to complete at home to help reinforce what we cover in our sessions.
