About Dermot
My name is Dermot, and I'm a tenor saxophonist in the University of Toronto's Jazz Studies program completing a Bachelor of Music.
I have considerable experience in performing, composing, and teaching music, as well as experience in other jobs and roles including municipal government and non-profit management.
After briefly studying at Berklee College of Music, where I co-founded a big band and worked with several other artists, I transferred to the University of Toronto for jazz-specific studies. Since then, I've had countless opportunities to perform in the GTA in both small and large jazz ensemble settings, as well as other styles including reggae and theatre pit performances. I double on standard wind instruments, specifically flute and clarinet.
I hold the phrase "praesis ut prosis, ne ut imperes", meaning "lead in order to serve, not to rule," close to my professional identity as a team player. I aim to serve you well as a student, and I look forward to working with you.

I'm a saxophone player with a focus in jazz and contemporary music. As your teacher, I aim to understand your interests so that we can build upon your musicality in each lesson, while also incorporating fundamental skills such as ear training, reading, and theory. I like to use my experience performing different styles of music, from jazz to reggae to orchestra, to emphasize the importance of attentive listening and good musicianship. Great fit for beginner and intermediate level students.
