About Luis
I’m Luis Ruiz, a passionate and versatile Professor of Animation, Designer, and Multimedia Artist with deep roots in the creative industry. With a B.F.A. in Computer Animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design, I’ve spent years mastering the intersection of art, technology, and storytelling. My toolkit spans a wide range of industry-standard software—from Autodesk Maya and Adobe Creative Suite to Houdini, ZBrush, Rhino, and Ableton Live—allowing me to bring ideas to life across 2D, 3D, and mixed media platforms. Whether it’s crafting immersive motion graphics, building intricate 3D models, or designing compelling user interfaces, I thrive on pushing creative boundaries. I’ve taught at leading institutions like Otis College of Art and Design and the Art Institute, where I’ve guided students through courses in animation, video editing, game design, and digital aesthetics. My teaching philosophy blends technical rigor with artistic exploration, empowering students to find their unique voice in the digital arts. Professionally, I’ve held roles such as Senior Staff Designer at Mattel Toys Inc., where I developed games, DVD content, and cutting-edge tech projects. As a freelance multimedia artist, I’ve collaborated with clients on everything from jewelry design and CG composites to licensed 3D models for Disney and interactive web presentations. With a career that bridges education, entertainment, and innovation, I bring a dynamic and forward-thinking approach to every project. I’m always exploring new creative horizons—and helping others do the same.

My Teaching Methods for Creativity & Art
I believe creativity is a skill that can be nurtured with the right balance of structure and freedom. My teaching approach blends technical mastery, creative exploration, and personal growth, helping students unlock their unique artistic voice.
Creative Thinking Techniques
Idea Mapping: I guide students through visual brainstorming to connect concepts and spark originality.
Story-Driven Design: Every artwork tells a story—I teach how to build narratives through composition, character, and mood.
Challenge-Based Learning: I assign creative prompts that push boundaries and encourage experimentation.
️ Artistic Techniques I Teach
Traditional Drawing: Anatomy, gesture, perspective, shading, and dynamic composition
Digital Design: Mastery of over 50 design apps, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, Procreate, and more
Mixed Media Exploration: Combining traditional and digital methods for hybrid creativity
Visual Development: Concept art, character design, environment design, and product visualization
My Teaching Style
Hands-On & Personalized: I adapt each lesson to the student’s goals, skill level, and interests.
Process-Focused: I emphasize the journey of creation—sketching, refining, and iterating—over perfection.
Feedback-Rich: I offer constructive critiques that build confidence and sharpen technique.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned artist, I help you grow not just as a designer, but as a creative thinker.
