Find out more about Amani

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

When I first listened to an orchestra play! I was 6-7 years old and the regional orchestra was playing! That’s where I fell in love with the cello, not just with its rich tone and colour, but the leadership it had within the ensemble.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Yes! One of my old favorite artists I’d say is Mort Garson. His music inspires me and I could listen to his music for days!!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Training the ear and rhythms. There is something about it that challenges us all at the beginning because it gently forces you to ease your mind and relax so you are able to understand it.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The trombone seems complicated, it’s somehow how a string instrument would work but it’s brass. No frets for strings, no pistons/buttons for trombone to work with.
  • What are your keys to success?

Working on knowing who you truly are, who you want to become, and finding the meanings to get you there.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Yo-Yo Ma, Simón Diaz, Thundercat (Stephen Lee Bruner).
I think the 3 of them have such extreme different vibes, I’d love to see how that would unfold :)
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I was 17 years old when I was touring with a youth orchestra in Venezuela, it was nice to teach the younger kids of those cities we visited and see their eyes shining from the happy moment of learning new things and hear us playing.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Everyone is unique, and I don’t try to be anyone else, I don’t expect my students to either. I think they feel that right away, and it creates a space where they can grow without pressure to fit a mold.
