About Alison

Hello, I am Alison and I am a professional musician. I have taught violin, viola and fiddle (as well as other instruments) for over 10 years, and I love what I do!

As a musician, I have performed and toured worldwide with orchestras and bands alike. I have appeared infront of audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Royal Military Tattoo, the Royal Highland show, Budapest Burns Supper, and Christmas with the Celts (USA). I have also toured belgium, and travelled to Norway as a guest teacher.

My own musical learning journey took me through the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Junior Academy, learning from renowned fiddle players such as Lauren McColl, Sarah-Jane Summers, and Rua Macmillan. I then completed a Bachelors degree at the University of Aberdeen in classical violin, music theory and composition. Upon finishing this, I returned to the RCS to complete a Masters in traditional music. Both degrees had an emphasis on technique, performance, and teaching ideology, all of which carry over into my teaching style.

About the lesson

I offer lessons from 30-90 minutes in a range of styles. I specialise in technical work, with an emphasis on performance.
Lessons are offered to anyone, whether you are an old hand, or a total beginner.

With a Bachelors degree in classical music, I enjoy taking my students through the fine details of the pieces they choose to do. I can take you all the way up to university entrance level, as well as develop your abilities in extra areas, such as improvisation, technical skills, theory knowledge and awareness of other musical styles.

I also hold a masters degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, specialising in traditional music. For those who wish to learn traditional music, I continue to teach technique as in any style, so that each student becomes the best they can be, with the knowledge and understanding of how our bodies work with our instrument. Traditional fiddle lessons also involve significant amounts of aural work, learning music by ear, and working without sheet music.

My approach to teaching is entirely pupil led. Over my 10+ years of teaching, I have merged various pedagogies, such as Kodaly, Suzuki, and traditional 1-1 teaching, to create what I have found to work well for almost all of those I have had the pleasure of teaching. I do not believe that one method suits all, and so, I use techniques from many, so that I may assist every student in a way that suits their needs.
