• 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I have always enjoyed mathematics, particularly the way a difficult problem can become simple once the underlying concept is understood.
  
  
  My interest in private tutoring developed from helping my daughter who were capable in mathematics but were struggling to turn that ability into confidence and consistent results. I found it very rewarding to see a student go from saying “I don’t understand this” to being able to solve the same type of problem independently.
  
  
  Over time, tutoring became much more than simply helping students with homework. I became particularly interested in VCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics and in understanding how students can prepare effectively for SACs and the final examinations.

• 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  My main subjects are VCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. General Maths sometimes.
  
  
  I particularly enjoy teaching Functions, Trigonometry, Complex Numbers and Vectors. These topics can initially seem very difficult, but they are also areas where a good explanation can make a significant difference.
  
  
  For example, in Vectors, I don't want students simply to memorise formulas and procedures. I want them to understand what the vectors actually represent and visualise the geometry behind them. Once the concepts are clear, enough practice can make even complicated vector problems much more manageable.
  
  
  There aren't really topics I dislike teaching. Some topics may be less exciting than others, but if they are important for VCE, my job is to find a clear and practical way to teach them.

• 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  I have been influenced by teachers who could explain complicated ideas in simple language.
  
  
  For me, the best mathematics teachers are not necessarily the people who can solve the hardest problems the fastest. They are the people who can understand why a student is confused and explain the same idea from a different angle.
  
  
  That has had a strong influence on my own teaching. When a student doesn't understand something, I try not to simply repeat the same explanation. I look for another way to explain it.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  I think a good tutor needs three things: strong subject knowledge, the ability to explain clearly, and patience.
  
  
  But for VCE tutoring, I would add another important quality: understanding the assessment system. Knowing mathematics is not enough. A tutor should understand the VCAA study design, SAC expectations, exam question styles and the common mistakes students make.
  
  
  A good tutor should also know when to explain, when to demonstrate, and when to stop talking and let the student solve the problem independently.
  
  
  Ultimately, my goal is not to make students dependent on tutoring. It is to help them become stronger and more independent mathematicians.

• 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One thing I often tell students is that getting a question wrong during practice can sometimes be more valuable than getting it right.
  
  
  Students naturally like seeing ticks on their work, but I often pay more attention to the questions with crosses. A mistake tells us exactly where the weakness is. If we understand why the mistake happened and correct it properly, that question has actually taught us something.
  
  
  I have seen students become much stronger once they stop being afraid of making mistakes. Practice is the place where you are allowed to get things wrong; the important thing is to learn from them before the SAC or exam.

• 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

  One of the biggest challenges in VCE mathematics is that understanding a concept and performing well in an examination are not the same thing.
  
  
  A student may understand everything when we discuss it together, but under exam conditions they also need accuracy, speed, problem-solving skills and good time management.
  
  
  This is especially important in Specialist Mathematics, where concepts become increasingly abstract and difficult.
  
  
  So my challenge as a tutor is not simply to help a student understand today's topic. I need to help them progress from understanding → practice → exam-style application → performing under exam conditions.

• 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My particular passion is teaching difficult mathematical concepts in a way that students can genuinely understand.
  
  
  I especially enjoy working with students who tell me, “I’m just not good at this topic.” Very often, they are perfectly capable; they simply haven't found an explanation that works for them yet.
  
  
  There is a special moment when a difficult idea suddenly makes sense to a student. That change in confidence is one of the things I enjoy most about tutoring.

• 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

  I think what makes me a Superprof is my sense of responsibility towards every student I teach.
  
  
  When a student chooses me as their tutor, I feel responsible for making that choice worthwhile. I set a high standard for myself and always try to provide the student with the best support I can, rather than simply delivering another hour of tutoring each week.
  
  
  That means understanding where the student is now, what their school is teaching, where their weaknesses are, what assessments are coming up, and what result they are aiming for. I then adjust my teaching accordingly. Some students need stronger foundations, some need help with difficult concepts, while others need more advanced VCAA exam preparation.
  
  
  For VCE students in particular, I try to combine conceptual understanding, structured practice, exam preparation and confidence building.
  
  
  Ultimately, I want every student who chooses me to feel that they made a good choice in their tutor, not only because their mathematics improves, but because they know their progress genuinely matters to me.
