I believe the most effective way to impart a love of learning and create life-long learners is to first, model enthusiastic, productive learning as a lifestyle by parents, teachers and others. A curiosity about the world, its people and events goes a long way toward "infecting" others to want to learn. An environment of discovery and wondering are the foundation for children to open to the ideas, possibilities and realities around them with an open mind, creativity and millions of questions. This is especially true, if there is a sense of playfulness and challenge where learning can be enjoyed and practiced for it's own sake- without external reward systems (especially grading at schools) interfering with the process.Once children and young adults sense the adventure in knowing more and seeking better answers they will never suffer motivation problems in learning.
The second key, I've found as I work with foreign language students in such an atmosphere, is for the person in the instructor's role to work alongside the new learner (we are "learning" together, so to speak) and providing what is called in educational-ese "scaffolding." This means that the teacher offers a support system for the student to progress higher and faster than he or she could on their own. I find two significant benefits in this approach. 1) The teacher is invested and involved in challenging and moving forward. All guidance and leadership comes from the side and this cooperative relationship strengthens the student's self-confidence. And, 2) Learners begin to tap into their own abilities to figure things out, solve problems, use reasoning, make comparisons and a multitude of critical thinking skills. While exercising these learning skills is important, I think more valuable is that the learner feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment and the empowerment it brings when they stretch their minds and hearts. This provides for even deeper self-motivation, the feedback loop of "Hey, if I work at it and use my mind, I can absorb or master many (maybe even most) things through life!" That, for me, personally, is the awesome gift of learning.
