About Gregory
I am a full time professional author, (of 35 years experience) and I have been published and widely performed (as a playwright). I am also an award winning translator of Swedish.
I have taught all four of my children, and some others, for Oxford entrance, with 100% success. This included applications for English Literature, Modern Foreign Languages and Philosophy. I am especially interested in trying to get students from non-academic backgrounds into the top universities, and if there are any students whose parents really cannot afford to pay, I am willing to offer you a reduced rate.
My speciality is helping you towards rigorous and original thought as well as clear expression.

My lessons will be preparing you for all aspects of the university application process. I will help you with your personal statement, any necessary written work, as well as preparation for entrance exams and interviews.
My aim is to take pupils with intellectual potential, whatever their academic background or level of knowledge, and equip them with what they need to make a successful application.
My lessons will be very rigorous and challenging - nothing other than this would prepare you for a successful application. Prepare to be asked a lot of difficult questions; but I will also help you find it within yourself to go about answering them.
My teaching will focus on two things - your ability to think clearly, and your reading.
In applicants, Oxbridge looks above all for clarity of thought. I will help you to develop thought and argument, avoiding ready-made ideas, clichés, and other confusions. This will prepare you for essay writing, personal statement writing and the interview.
I will help you to read widely around your subject of interest. I am very well read in all the humanities subjects, and have an extensive library of books on history, politics, sociology, economics, philosophy, theology, psychoanalysis, literature and more, all of which can be at your disposal.
A lot of advice on the internet tells you that your personal statement needs to stand out, and people will sometimes make the mistake of using hyperbolic language to make it do this. I believe that what the top universities are looking for in a personal statement is evidence that you have an interest as well as potential in your subject. I think the best way of showing this is by showing that you read, and that you think about what you read. I have got all 4 of my children into Oxford based on this principle.
Preparation for the interview...
I am flexible in how I teach, and will plan my lessons based on your particular requirements. Our lessons may involve conversations about what you have read, mock interviews, writing tasks or essay writing help. I am happy to set tasks or entire essays for homework and to mark them between lessons.
