About Fiona
I am an experienced biology and chemistry teacher/tutor who has loved science since starting to study it at secondary school and I thoroughly enjoy helping people understand these subjects and to achieve their full potential in their exams. I taught in Oxfordshire for 12 years, including being Head of Biology for 6 years, and then tutored full time for 5 years before moving to south Bath at the end of 2017, where I have continued tutoring in person and also online via Zoom. I enjoy teaching and tutoring science at all levels and it is wonderful when a student understands something for the first time or simply becomes more confident in their own understanding, wants to learn more and can achieve their goals in the subject.
I have been a full time tutor since January 2013 and have successfully tutored biology and chemistry for GCSE (most exam boards and for both Double and Triple award), IGCSE (Cambridge and Edexcel), A-level (most exam boards including international specifications) and European Baccalaureate exams with my students making excellent progress in their overall understanding, gaining confidence in their abilities and their exam results showing improvement. With many students I have also given advice on revision techniques, time management, stress management, subject choices and university applications as I see my role as more than tutoring the subject for the exams, as other factors can have an important impact on their success. I am comfortable and experienced with tutoring at the parental home, at my home and online. I have been a qualified teacher for over 25 years, teaching science at KS3, chemistry at GCSE and AS-level and biology at GCSE and A-level in state schools.

Tutorials will take an individual approach based on the student’s needs and learning styles and there will be regular discussions with the student and their parents on what the student needs to achieve their goals. My aim is for the student to enjoy their learning so that their understanding of the subject improves to give them the confidence they need to meet their full potential in their exams. I cover subject knowledge, concepts, study skills, revision skills and exam techniques, and monitor their progress throughout lessons. I prepare each session so that the activities suit the individual tutee and the syllabus that they are studying. I have packs of prepared worksheets for most chemistry and biology A-level and GCSE specifications and prepare more when required as well as access to many exam questions. I like to give regular homeworks, especially at A-level, as this allows more accurate monitoring of their progress and allows independent written work to be assessed and improved on.

I did my science degree with Fiona at Edinburgh, so when I later needed an A-Level Chemistry tutor for my eldest, I didn’t hesitate for a minute. I knew that Fiona was a conscientious, and no-nonsense individual, but also that Fiona was way more patient than me as a parent. Fiona absolutely plugged the missing confidence / content gaps that my eldest was experiencing with her Chemistry teacher at school. Not only that, Fiona was also a great sounding board for my stressed teen generally, particularly in the nerve-filled run up to exam season. It was wonderful to have another trusted adult around to steady the ship. Fiona played a key role in enabling my eldest to achieve an A* in her Chem A-Level - which helped her realise her dream of making it into Medical School. We honestly can’t recommend Fiona highly enough.
Mrs Gadd tutored me in Biology for five years, all the way through GCSE and A level, and honestly she's the best teacher I've had. I got a 9 at GCSE and I'm predicted an A* at A level, and I really don't think I'd have got anywhere near that without her. She is amazing at explaining and checking that I truly understood and remembered what I was taught.
The thing I loved most is that she always made the lessons engaging. She's so patient and always made sure I understood. She also really helped me believe in myself, especially when I was doubting whether I could do it.
Five years is a long time and she was always kind, encouraging and genuinely wanted me to do well. If you want a Biology tutor who actually cares and makes you better at the subject and more confident in yourself, honestly you won't find better!Fiona is a very good teacher. She taught my grandson Biology and Chemistry at A level. He is on the autism spectrum, so had his difficulties, but she always got on with him well.
He achieved 3 grade B’s at A level and now is just going to start reading Biology at Bristol University.
I would highly recommend her as a tutor.Absolutely incredible Tutor! If you're looking for a Chemistry or Biology tutor then look no further than Fiona. Not only is she an expert in her fields, she has a wonderful approach to tutoring giving both subject and holistic support for the exams. Fiona's knowledge of every exam board is incredible tailoring each session to exactly what the student needs and what the exam board is looking for. We used Fiona when my daughter needed to re-sit her A-Levels for a medicine degree. Fiona went right back to the beginning of each subject and topic ensuring that the knowledge was firmly in place giving new revision techniques along the way. She was so present and engaged through all the sessions and beyond, taking a real interest in the progress of the student. Everyone should have a tutor like this and we feel very lucky to have been able to benefit from her teaching and skills.
