About Benjamin
My teaching style is about making my instruction fit your particular way of learning. Some people learn best by hearing. I can supply you a video of the music you are focusing on learning.
Some students learn best by seeing. I help the student to focus on the patterns within the music that help them to learn much faster. Some students learn best by feeling the music with their hand. I help the student learn that way by giving them the finger numbers that represent and help them to play the music that they are learning.

Hi. My name is Ben Knoedler, and I enjoy giving people of all different ages the knowledge of how to play the piano. I’ve given piano lessons since 1994. I’ve given online lessons since Covid struck at the end of 2019. I’ve played the piano since I was 5 years old and for 60 years, starting to play by ear without written music. In years to come, I hope to compose music for the piano as well as other instruments and or instrument groups.
I am also a regular music classroom teacher. I worked in that area from 1989 until 2024. I taught Grades Pre-K through 8.
My teaching style is the following. Everyone learns in a little bit different fashion. So I don’t necessarily teach any student in the same way as another.
Some learn by hearing. Some learn by seeing. Some learn by manually connecting with the information. Teaching piano is ideally suited to a mixture of these three styles of learning.
Another component that distinguishes the way I teach is that as well as teaching note names, I also help the student to look at and understand the patterns involved with written music. I also teach the music theory behind what is on the written page. That enables the player to read music in “chunks“, which will help later with their sight reading skills.
Finally, I’m willing to “go the extra mile” to make sure that everyone that wants to be successful is successful. In the past, I’ve sent videos of my hand playing a specific passage.. When I give a lesson, I have a whiteboard and dry erase marker handy to further explain what is really happening in the music. I have even given extra time to clients to help them with their understanding of the music that they are learning. All these add up to greater success on the part of my students.
Also, being that I taught very young children in schools, I am able to relate to and understand how very young people process information and what needs to be done to enable and help them.
I am also Suzuki certified. I attended the Suzuki Institute where Shinichi Suzuki himself came. Suzuki has been recognized as a great music educator. I have certification to teach Suzuki style piano lessons up to and including Book 3. If that would be the way a parent would want their child to be taught, then I can accommodate that request as well.
I’m looking forward to lessons with you, my new students!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by students with Benjamin.
Perfect! Ben is a fantastic teacher. He takes a unique approach for each student (myself and two of my kids). He is very communicative, engaging, and encouraging in his lessons and has a wealth of knowledge and expertise that could be spent on a whole class but is instead focused 1 on 1. We are grateful to have found such a great fit for us!

Two of my kids and I have each been doing weekly piano lessons with Benjamin for almost 5 months now. He is truly good at what he does, he has a long teaching history, and he personalizes each lesson based on our different needs and learning paces. He's friendly, funny, and engaging, putting new learners at ease! Also, we didn't know what to expect for virtual lessons, but they have meshed with our season of life beautifully, eliminating the hassle of driving somewhere on a busy school night. We highly recommend!
