About Phyllis

Thank you for your interest in violin lessons. I have been playing the violin for over 25 years, and have been teaching for over 15 years, both privately and at music schools in Vancouver, Canada. Since moving to the UK I have been teaching privately.

I am experienced in teaching both children and adults, and am aiming to focus on teaching adult students. I am dedicated to finding practical solutions to students’ technical problems, and try to teach with patience as well as humour, because while violin playing is hard work, in the end music should be enjoyable.

I hold an ARCT diploma in Violin Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. I am also a composer and actor, and have served as Assistant Music Director on several stage musical productions as well as served as a composer on several short film soundtracks. About the lesson

I am a violin teacher and actor based in St Albans. I especially enjoy teaching adults, and focus on improving technique in practical ways with specific exercises and ways to practise so you can improve at home in between lessons. I am classically trained but am happy to teach pop or other genres that students are interested in learning.

Perfect! Great teacher for adult violin beginner
Phyllis kindly took me on and was flexible with time and location. She's been very good and patient with me just starting out learning to play the violin - I'm learning it for myself and also to help encourage my daughter who's also just started.
Phyllis is clearly an experienced teacher and can diagnose and suggest a number of remedies for the basic errors in technique that a beginner like myself makes.
The lessons fly by and she makes great use of online media afterwards to cater to areas I'm interested in (currently learning to play some Christmas carols) as well as ways to improve my technique, both written after each lesson and on online youtube videos.
There's no doubt in my mind that she will help me achieve my goal of being able to play the violin quickly and well.

I was lucky enough to have Phyllis as a violin instructor for two years. As an adult beginner, I was very glad to find an instructor who could tailor her teaching to my needs. Phyllis was fantastic at explaining music theory at a level that worked for me and what I needed without overwhelming me. She pushed me to improve and do better while keeping lessons fun. I improved significantly under Phyllis' tutorage, in contrast to my previous instructor with whom I struggled constantly. I can't recommend Phyllis highly enough, she's upbeat, has great patience, and knows how to teach effectively. And, of course, she plays violin beautifully. If she was still near me, I would definitely be taking lessons with her still.
