About Ariana

Hi, I am a violin tutor with over 11 years of experience and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Historical Performance. My focus is baroque and early music, an area of violin playing I find endlessly fascinating. I have spent years researching and performing period-appropriate technique on both modern and baroque instruments.
I teach historical bowing, ornamentation, and stylistic interpretation specific to baroque and early classical repertoire. Many of my students are advanced players curious about historical performance practice or preparing for early music ensembles. We study original manuscripts and treatises together, connecting historical context directly to technique on the instrument.
I once worked with a modern-trained violinist who had never touched a baroque bow before our first lesson together. We spent months adjusting her bowing and ornamentation until her Bach performance transformed into something remarkably authentic to the period. She later joined a professional baroque ensemble and still credits that shift in technique.

About the lesson

My teaching approach specializes in baroque and historical violin performance practice. Playing music from this era authentically requires more than just correct notes, so we study period appropriate bowing, ornamentation, and phrasing closely. We start with historical bow technique, since baroque bowing differs significantly from modern approaches.
From there, we explore ornamentation practices common to the era, including trills, appoggiaturas, and stylistic embellishments. Understanding historical context is also part of every lesson, since knowing a piece's background shapes how it should be interpreted. I often introduce period instruments or baroque bows so students experience these techniques firsthand.
Some students come from a strong modern classical background and need to slightly unlearn certain habits to play authentically in this older style. Others are newer to violin altogether and enjoy starting directly with historical technique as their foundation. Either way, I guide students carefully through this specialized and rewarding repertoire.
