About Abina

When I was 5 years old my mother rented a violin for herself but I wasn't allowed to play it. It drove me crazy and I wanted to play so badly! After several years of begging, my mother took me to my first private lesson with the promise that I would practice every day. She held me to that promise and her dedication to my practice routine made me the musician I am today.

I moved to Boston at age 13 and shortly after was accepted into Project STEP, a pioneer program in the movement to build racial equity in classical music that provides talented young string musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music with access, opportunities, and support. This education includes a selection of highly competent teachers and a well rounded education at the pre-college program at New England Conservatory. I was a recipient of the Reid Music Scholarship at Lake Forest College in Illinois. There I was able to nurture my passion for music education accessibility, interning at an El Sistema inspired program sponsored by the People’s Music School in Chicago.

During my career I have had the opportunity to play on various important stages in the Boston Area and Spain. Those include: Symphony Hall, The National Auditorium in Madrid, Jordan Hall, the Mary Baker Eddy Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Ryles Jazz Club, Saunder's Theatre at Harvard University along with regular appearances at the First Church.

For the past three years I was teaching Suzuki Violin in Madrid, Spain where I communicated with students in both English and Spanish. Now, I have set up my home studio in East Boston so that I can continue to offer the opportunity to teach violin to children, teens and adults of this neighborhood.

About the lesson

Welcome to my Orient Heights Home Studio. I welcome students from beginning to advanced levels in both English and Spanish. My students start their music journey learning proper violin technique, learning pieces by ear, and learning to read music.

Parental involvement is of the upmost importance in a child's musical development, and I make it my first priority to include the parents in every part of the learning process which includes attendance at lessons and involvement in their practice at home. In this way each student can reach their full potential through a positive learning environment nurtured by both the parent and teacher. The Suzuki Method is unique in that it lays out the parent's role in a child's learning, something that the parents of famous musicians throughout history did intuitively. In todays day and age routines can be a challenge to establish. I try to help busy families by giving them as many resources and support as possible in this endeavor.
