About Kristen

Hi! I'm an experienced violinist with over a decade of orchestral training, and I specialize in teaching beginner violin—especially for kids and those picking up the instrument for the first time. While I don’t hold formal teaching certifications, I’ve spent years immersed in music performance and mentoring young musicians. I was a member of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2012 through to the Senior level. I am a graduate from Lord Byng Secondary’s Byng Arts Program (Orchestra Strings). I played with the Lord Byng Senior Honor Orchestra since grade 10, where we earned first place at the 2017 San Francisco WorldStrides Festival of Golds. During that time, I also volunteered as a volunteer for beginner-level orchestras, helping younger students grow in skill and confidence. I am currently playing in small ensembles and quartets during my free time, while studying at McGill University. What sets me apart is my genuine patience, clear communication, and supportive teaching style. I understand what it feels like to be a beginner, and I work hard to make each student feel comfortable and motivated. Whether we’re learning how to hold the bow or play our first song, I break things down in a simple, stress-free way that makes learning fun and rewarding. You or your child can expect lessons that are structured, encouraging, and tailored to your pace—with plenty of room to ask questions, grow, and enjoy the process. About the lesson

My teaching style is structured yet flexible. I draw from my own classical training and orchestral background, but I adapt every lesson to the student’s pace and personality. I focus on:
Building foundational technique: bow hold, posture, intonation, and tone.
Developing music literacy: reading simple notation and rhythms.
Positive reinforcement: especially important for kids learning something new.

My lessons are ideal for:
Beginners (ages 6 and up).
Children and pre-teens starting violin for the first time.
Students preparing to join school orchestras or youth ensembles.
Parents looking for a calm, supportive intro to the instrument for their child.

Sample Lesson Plan (45–60 minutes)
1. Warm-up (5–10 min)
Open strings, bow exercises, or a posture check-in
2. Technique focus (10–15 min)
Work on bow hold, fingering, or scales
3. Reading & rhythm (10–15 min)
Simple note reading exercises or rhythm games
4. Repertoire (15–20 min)
Practice beginner-friendly pieces like “Twinkle Twinkle,” etc.
5. Wrap-up & goals (5 min)
Review what we learned, answer questions, and assign a fun practice goal
