About MingWei

I'm in my first year at the University of Warwick, studying Mathematics and Physics, having just completed my A levels. I've been fascinated by both subjects and I'm looking forward to sharing that with the students I teach.

At A level I achieved A*A*A* in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics, placing among the top students nationally. Beyond the syllabus, I earned Gold in the UK Mathematics Trust's Senior Challenge and Gold in Round 1 of the British Physics Olympiad. I also spent three years on Oxford University's COMPOS programme, a selective online Maths and Physics course that extends students beyond the exam standard.

Alongside my own studies, I spent two years working as a teaching assistant on the outreach programme at King's Maths School, supporting students through problem-solving sessions and explaining concepts in a range of different ways. That experience taught me a great deal about how differently students think, and how much of good teaching is simply finding the explanation that works for the person in front of you.

Having sat these exams very recently, I know exactly what examiners are looking for and where students tend to lose marks. I take tutoring seriously: I plan lessons around what you actually need, turn up prepared, and I'm always reachable between sessions if something comes up in your homework.

About the lesson

My aim is always to make sure you actually understand what you're doing, rather than just memorising a method and hoping the right question comes up. I've done a fair bit of super-curricular maths and physics myself, so I like to push a little past the standard exam material. Once you've tackled harder problems, the exam questions start to feel a lot more manageable.

There are no stupid questions. I'm very happy to explain something three different ways until one of them clicks. If my teaching style isn't working for you, tell me and I'll change it. That matters more than anything else.

Lessons are an hour long, covering either Maths or Physics. We'll usually start by going over anything from last time or whatever you're currently stuck on, spend most of the lesson working through problems together, then leave a few minutes at the end to recap and talk about what to focus on next. I teach using a Miro board so we can write on the same page in real time, though if you don't have a tablet that's no problem at all, as long as I can see your working.

Whether you want one-off homework help, regular weekly lessons, or a push before an exam, I'd love to help. I really enjoy teaching, and there's nothing better than watching something finally make sense.
