About Chanyoung

Hi, I'm Chanyoung (Ryan), and I'm currently studying MORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics) at the University of Warwick. I recently completed the IB Diploma at an international school, so I understand first-hand how challenging the IB can be and what it takes to turn understanding a topic into actually achieving a 6 or 7.

I achieved 7/7/7 across all three IB Mathematics AA HL papers, as well as a 7 in Economics HL, Psychology and physics SL as well as Mandarin Ab Initio. I also previously received an offer to study Actuarial Science at the London School of Economics (LSE).

My perspective on tutoring also comes from being a student myself. During my IB, I worked with three different Mathematics tutors over three years, each with a very different teaching style. That experience taught me something I think is really important: there isn't one teaching method that works for everyone.

For example, I personally found that I struggled to stay motivated with traditional homework-based tuition. I learnt much more effectively when my tutor put me in situations that felt like an actual test.

My lessons therefore combine conceptual understanding, unfamiliar problems, past-paper practice and regular mock-style assessments. I want students to understand why a method works rather than simply memorising a formula or recognising a question they've seen before.

I also understand that students come to tutoring with very different amounts of time before their exams. Whether you have six months to build your foundations or six weeks to focus on your weakest topics and exam technique, I will adapt our lessons around your ability, goals, remaining time and existing timetable.

I believe that effective learning starts with **genuine understanding**, while improving your grades comes from learning how to apply that understanding under exam conditions.

During my own IB experience, I noticed that traditional tuition can sometimes become heavily focused on past papers. Past papers are extremely valuable, but I personally saw several of my friends spend weeks memorising questions, formulae and solution methods. When they encountered something unfamiliar in the exam, they struggled because they had memorised *what* to do rather than understood *why* they were doing it.

I don't want my students to fall into that trap.

I have personally helped several of my friends throughout the IB, particularly with Mathematics AA HL, and I really enjoy finding different ways to explain something when the first explanation doesn't work.

Alongside official IB past papers, I can also provide relevant questions from other syllabuses (such as A levels) to test whether students can apply their knowledge to unfamiliar problems, rather than simply recognising questions they have seen before.

Ultimately, my goal is for a student to see a question they have **never encountered before** and confidently think, *"I know how to approach this."*

I achieved **7/7/7 across all three IB Mathematics AA HL papers** and currently study **MORSE (Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics) at the University of Warwick**. Lessons are typically **60 minutes**, tailored to the student's level and goals.
