About Max
I love teaching, and I love teaching piano. As a teacher in general, I help my students develop skills like curiosity, patience, and hard-work. As a piano teacher specifically, I help my students develop their passion for music, their technical abilities, and capacity for close listening. Learning piano isn’t easy. In taking on the challenge of learning piano, my students learn skills they can apply elsewhere: detail-oriented work, capacity for self-reflection, perseverance, and creativity.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My first priority with a new student is to listen. First, I want to listen to what the student's goals are. Rather than imposing what I think lessons should be about, I let the student lead the way. Next, I try to listen to the student's strengths and weaknesses. Though I may not be able to adapt in the first lesson, over time I aim to gather information to tailor future lessons in ways that will slowly help them develop their skills at the piano.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory. In addition, I took classes in Piano Pedagogy and earned a minor in Music Theory. However, the best training I have received has been from my teachers. My first teacher was a kindhearted woman who nurtured my passion for music. She taught me about the joys of the metronome. She used stickers on the keys to help me find my way to middle C. She introduced me to the trusty “spinner” which told me how many times to practice a difficult passage. Her spirit and kindness left a lasting impact on me as a student and a teacher.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I would advise the student to look for a flexible teacher who can adapt. It’s hard to say what students want in general because people are so different and want such different things out of piano lessons. I think the best teacher is able to collaborate with each student to develop a plan specific to the student. In terms of traits, I think the best teachers are patient, good at listening, thoughtful, and creative.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with adult, college age, and elementary age students. Each age comes with unique challenges. However, as a teacher, my priority for students of all ages is to nurture their passion for music and piano.

Piano studios are often filled with an eclectic but wonderful mix of folks. No matter your age, experience, or ambition; I'm prepared to make piano playing a joy.
For students looking to have fun and learn a few pieces along the way, my approach is flexible. I think students thrive, even if they aren't practicing much, when lessons are a space to be free to learn and listen without judgment.
For more serious students, I bring formal education in the Taubman method, an approach for preventing and curing pianistic injuries; significant knowledge about the theoretical side of music; and most of all my personal experience with the joys and struggles of trying to master this fickle instrument.

I had a great experience learning piano over the past few months with Max. As a complete beginner, I appreciated how patient and flexible he was throughout our lessons. He tailored his teaching style to fit my learning pace, whether it was breaking down how to read music, using flashcards to help me memorize notes, or challenging me with new songs that pushed me just the right amount.
He explained concepts clearly and always found a way to keep things engaging and motivating. Thanks to his supportive approach, I’ve gone from feeling intimidated by the piano to genuinely excited to keep learning and improving. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to build a strong foundation in a comfortable and encouraging environment.Really technical classical player who diversifies his lessons to make sure it doesn’t get draining. He helped me begin learning gymnopedia which is a really beautiful piece. Highly recommend.
Max has a unique approach to teaching piano, making every lesson engaging and tailored to the student’s style. With a mix of technique, creativity, and fun, Max helps students build confidence and truly enjoy playing.
